I noticed that I haven't been doing much "study abroad"-work lately. It's not "work" in any formal sense, but rather, "spending time looking up/filling out stuff for study abroad." :P I mean luckily, I didn't miss any deadlines, or anything for that matter, so I'm safe, but it's still good to be on top of things. That's why I checked my study abroad packet yesterday, saw what I needed to work on, etc. *sigh* Studying abroad requires a
lot of work.
On a random note, I've been thinking lately about how some people just drag Nazism and/or Hitler (and sometimes the Holocaust) into debates/arguments. For one thing, I've been sick of this for... I don't know how long. It's just trite and annoying, and it reduces the horrendous nature of Nazism to something that's not as horrendous. Now, I'm not saying that horrible things don't happen now or haven't happened after Nazism. They do, but let's just say that most of the time that I saw parallels being made between Nazism and something else, the parallel was just silly, especially on message boards. Let me just say that I'm all for well-thought-out, plausible analogies involving Nazism (which are rare). I'm just against Nazism, Hitler, and the Holocaust being dragged into every little argument.
To my joy (and amusement) I actually found out about a law that addresses this exact issue. It's called Godwin's Law, which states that, "
As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one" (cited
here). In reference to Godwin's Law, the Dodds Corollary states that, "
When debating a particular subject, if a comparison or implied connection is drawn between the opponent's argument and Hitler and the Nazi Party, the maker of that statement is automatically discredited and the debate is automatically lost by the person or group who referenced the connection to Hitler or the Nazis" (cited
here). I thought to myself, "Finally! Someone addressed this issue!" :P
